Newsday Wood for Kevin

Posted by: BCPires in Untagged  on Print PDF

And so after two weeks of suspense – literally, too, just leaving him dangling, not using columns he dutifully supplied, without the common decency of an explanation – the Trinidadian newspaper, Newsday, has sacked Kevin Baldeosingh, easily its best writer and the only semi-public figure to have displayed any integrity in the whole Integrity Commission bullshit affair; and you have to take your hat off to Trinidad; nowhere else would have the gumption to publicly punish someone for doing the right thing.

It was Kevin who exposed the blatant plagiarism of Catholic priest, Henry Charles, who copied at least three columns from others. (I myself sent a letter to all the papers, clearly illustrating the third instance; no paper published it.)

The Express story reports that Kevin approached Newsday, his own paper, with the story first (as I happen to know he did, since he contacted me about it, as well as the Humanist Association, of which he is the president and I, nominally, the PRO). The simple truth is Newsday had the story before anyone else and chose not to run it.

And now, in a plot twist Albert Camus might have rejected for his novella, The Stranger, Kevin, the open atheist, is being punished for revealing the hypocrisy of a priest his own newspaper would have hushed up.

Shame on Newsday, shame on the priest – how he sleeps at night, the Devil alone knows – and shame on Trinidad & Tobago for penalizing the only person in the whole shebang that did the right thing and protecting the scoundrels who let us down.

...and there might as well be none left, 'cause we will need all of it - each - to try to grapple with the upside-down nature of this sorry, and i daresay still unfolding, drama.
the trini papers gone and fire its best two firefighters who still managed to leave us with a smile every week - and now they gone and fire bc and kevin!

This too, is another sad state of affairs for this 'great nation' of T&T. Truly, it's two best columnists have been removed for trying to open peoples' eyes and to make them think a little and perhaps laugh along the way. And by the way, what work does this president actually do for the people of T&T, other than to drink expensive champagne and stay in 5 star hotels on their behalf and at their expense? He is the biggest freeloader of all-resign? Who would give up that level of freeness-Max Richards? A disgrace.

We needed all of Rudder, Bunji and Faye-Ann to say, "Red, White and Black! It's a Carnival diplomacy," just because we needed the street cred, and who better than the High Priest, and the Royal Family of Soca to tell us what we already know (even though it's much more painful than an inconvenient truth)?

I've plagiarized this from Aravind Adiga's The White Tiger, "Servants have to keep other servants from becoming innovators, experimenters, or entrepreneurs" No more applicable words can be written about Trinidad's society. Hopefully we can still continue to read KB's columns on BC Raw. Site's like this are all the more important as the chicken coop is proven to be guarded from within.

I personally am not a fan of Kevin Baldeosingh's atheistic views. Nonetheless, I have read the news of his unfair dismissal with dismay; Mr. Baldeosingh is a journalist, and a human being. He has the right to disagree if that is his wish. To terminate his employment on such spurious grounds is a bad sign of the lack of principles and integrity, and a frightening indication of the rise of the politics of convenience, morality at the point of a gun, and the aristocracy of graft and pull in this country.

...that someone in a high position at newsday was worried/warned/threatened about full-page government ads being yanked if newsday didn't make the "whistle blower" pay (and apparently pay by not being paid)?

They closing ranks
written by Fazeela, May 25, 2009
I wrote the Express on the matter of Newsday's action against Kevin. My letter has not been published. MATT is strangely silent. The clans are conspiring to have the matter silenced. What a sorry day for this country.

I don't know what to think about MATT's silence except that silence means consent. All unions have cliques, and favorites within the ranks but this may not be the case in this case.

MATT was already read the Riot Act
written by Ray, May 25, 2009
MATT and its president seemed to have already gotten their warning with the "PM radio station visit" affair, and may now be choosing their battles to avoid what has become Kevin's fate; after all, MATT's president does work for a member of PNM's lodge-like inner circle, no?

Anybody resigned from newsday?
written by Bitter cynic, May 27, 2009
If this had happened at a real journalistic establishment, the entire newsroom would have resigned in protest. Has any columnist/reporter at Newsday said anything? Peter O'Connor? Vashty Maharaj? If they don't, we'll know they're pathetic, spineless frauds, and the words they write aren't worth a thing.
Same goes for MATT. I'm waiting for their news release.
Have any advertisers pulled their ads from Newsday? This is so disgraceful, it's unbelievable.

Like a new toilet in the Hyatt, it's so easy to flush hypocrites in a newsroom. I am beginning to feel they secretly admired the plagiarizing priest.

Well, advertisers my be people who pray for health, wealth, and their children not to be kidnapped at the alter of a painted CEPEP stone so I don't think they will be pulling anything other than their own stones anytime soon.

Why resign?
written by Ray, May 27, 2009
It was more of an aberration when the Integrity Commission recently resigned. Trinidad has no such culture; why stop the funds from runnin'? So you can be blacklisted with those that stood up? Nah nah nah, not in sweet T&T...and you could take that to the (royal, republic, first citizens, or sperm) bank.

by the way, aka, i read ur blog. as bc himself would say, "it would be hilarious if it weren't tragic."

I have never liked Kevin Baldeosingh articles, as I found his writings reminded attending a tutorial. Nevertheless, writing on the plagiarizing priest took courage. Incidentaly, Newsday has never been a favourite of mine.

integrity selection
written by Dr L Neville Roachlord, May 27, 2009
Before an opinion can be formed, it is important facts must be known as reasons, causes or whatever for certain actions. Which is why I have not formed any opinions on President Maxwell's selection of the Integrity Commission. Reason tells me, when he has offered his side, then conclusions can be made.

In matters like these, silence could mean at least two things. Guilt or... Ok, one thing. Either Max is on the verge of clearing his name or resigning but if the silence continues and the questions about the appointments are ignored then the questions would have been answered by public opinion.

I wish I had tutorials like Mr. Baldeosingh's writings smilies/wink.gif

Dr. Roachlord - Max has offered his side already - and failed miserably to convince the best of us. Maybe you should read the Law Association's press release at http://www.newsday.co.tt/news/0,100674.html

Roachlord,
The President had ample opportunity to be heard and give his version of the "facts", rather than return and face his responsibility he decided to remain on vacation for three weeks and treat citizens with the contempt that slaves and Trinis expect of their masters.

Vacation? What vacation?
written by Alan Scott, May 29, 2009
Amidst all the furore of plagiarism and firing and father priest, I would still like to know why Max Richards needed a vacation in the first palce? Does he actually work? Would someone please enlighten me? I only ever see him vacationing, be it the World Cup, Pigeon Point, or drinking champagne at some summit or the other. I am befuddled at the need for this high-living 'president'of the twin-island, third world nation state. Someone please explain.

Sacking Kevin
written by Raynier, May 29, 2009
BC, as one of the founders of Newsday (no longer employed there but I still write occasional stories for them), I am dismayed that Baldeosingh would be sacked for the reasons you state. Could there be more in the mortar than just the pestle, and it turns out that just the timing is suspect? I would hate to think that a paper I helped create which was founded on very firm principles (independence being one) would act so unfairly.
